"I Can't Draw" is an academic paper I wrote for a course called Principles and Practices of Art Education, which I took with the esteemed professor Vivian Poey. The issue addressed in this paper is one that art teachers deal with constantly: students who believe that they cannot draw and that they are not artists. As part of my research for this paper, I gave a survey to the middle school students (grades 5-8) in the classroom where I did my early field experience. The results were very interesting, and the survey is one I will use again. My favorite response was one that a particularly precocious fifth grader gave for the question 'Do you believe that artists are born or made?'. His response was, "I believe that artists are made because I don't believe in destiny." WOW.
The survey questions were as follows:
1. What do you think makes a drawing “good”? Please list 2 or more qualities.
2. What skills/abilities do you think a “good” artist should possess? Please
list 2 or more.
3. Are there any personal characteristics, qualities, or emotions that you associate
with artists? If so, please list them here.
4. Do you believe that artists are born or made? Both? Neither? Please explain why
you think so.
5. Do you have a favorite artist? If so, who? And what do you like about them?
6. Do you consider yourself to be an artist? Why or why not?
