RECASTING ART HISTORY
"Recasting Art History" is a photographic collage lesson (either traditional or digital) which asks students to look at art history critically. In this lesson students themselves become part of art history by remixing a historical piece in a way that expresses something about contemporary life as they know it. The lesson uses exemplar artists: Kehinde Wiley, Yolanda Lopez, Alma Lopez, and Ester Hernandez. This is a lesson that could be modified to use with younger students as well as other artistic mediums (such as drawing and painting). This is something that I would like to do, given my interest in drawing and painting.
Above is the "Recasting Art History" lesson plan. Below are the slides from the PowerPoint associated with this lesson plan.
PRINTMAKING UNIT
This printmaking unit contains four different lesson plans designed for upper middle school aged students, but it could certainly be used with high schoolers as well. The lessons are as follows: surface rubbings, stencil art, monoprints/monotypes, and simply DIY screen-printing. Besides the learning of art skills, these lessons also incorporate historical and social discussions.
Above is the PDF document containing the unit plan write up. Below are the slides from the stencil art lesson PowerPoint presentation.
Below are examples I made for the DIY screen-printing lesson. The screen I used is at the center. To the left is a print I made on paper and enhanced with ink and gouache. To the right is a t-shirt I made using the screen.
